Majors: Fine Arts and Communication
Colleges: College of Architecture, Art, and Planning and College of Agriculture and Life Sciences
I am a senior pursuing concurrent degrees in Fine Arts and Communication. I came to Cornell as a Fine Arts major, with a definitive interest in social science. I connected with the Communication Department early on. I was inspired in my early courses to question and consider my surroundings through a communication lens.
Communication has informed how I approach art and my art has informed how I approach communication. The artist in me creates works centered on ideas of identity. I have created three-story paper quilts, suspended them, and proceeded to discuss rural identity. At present I am working on a series of artists’ books that consider the female body. Fine Arts function on an esoteric level. Communication grounds these ideas about identity through systematic discourse, allowing me to better analyze both art and communication.
I need to not only be able to create art, but to understand the potential effects. The critical consideration of a communication lens adds to my understanding of gender, identity, framing, and how we opt to analyze what is presented to us through media.
